Our Story
A Legacy of Hospitality & Family
For over 40 years, Howard and Ingrid Walker have been creating unique hospitality experiences, each property reflecting their passion for beautiful spaces, nature, and warm family connections. From the misty highlands of Mpumalanga to the wild landscapes of Limpopo, and now the stunning coastline of Plettenberg Bay, their journey has been one of adventure, creativity, and an enduring love for special places.
The Beginning in Mpumalanga
Waboomkop Farm, Mpumalanga
Howard and Ingrid’s venture into hospitality began on their farm, Waboomkop, where they built three self-catering fishing cottages in the picturesque highlands of Mpumalanga. This was the first step in what would become a lifelong passion for creating exceptional guest experiences.
Critchley Hackle Lodge (1988)
Their first hotel, Critchley Hackle Lodge, opened in the charming trout-fishing village of Dullstroom, offering guests a tranquil retreat surrounded by nature.
Millstream Timeshare & Walkersons Country Manor
Building on their success, they went on to develop Millstream Timeshare and later Walkersons Country Manor, a luxurious 5-star country hotel that became a hallmark of refined countryside hospitality.

A New Chapter
in the Lowveld
Walkers River Camp, Klaserie River, Limpopo
Trading the misty hills for the wild beauty of the Lowveld, the Walkers moved to Limpopo in 2008 and opened Walkers River Camp on the banks of the Klaserie River, a secluded safari retreat that blends luxury with the untamed wilderness.
2023
Walkers Plains Camp, Timbavati Private Nature Reserve
In June 2023, they launched Walkers Plains Camp, a fully catered safari lodge in the heart of the Timbavati Private Nature Reserve, bringing guests closer to Africa’s iconic wildlife.

2023
Walkers Beach, Plettenberg Bay
While their journey took them across South Africa, Plettenberg Bay has always been close to their hearts. Both Ingrid’s grandfather, Brigadier OJ Hansen, and Howard’s father, Mark Walker Snr., played significant roles in the region’s early development—Mark helped establish the Plettenberg Bay airport, while Otto Hansen’s farm supplied fresh dairy to local restaurants.
Many cherished family holidays were spent in Plett, and in 2014, the Walkers purchased Stoneridge, a property originally owned by Ingrid’s Hansen cousins. After three years of meticulous design and construction, Walkers Beach opened in September 2023, standing proudly on its rocky outcrop with breathtaking views of the ocean.

A Family Affair
Howard and Ingrid have raised four boys—Michael, Mark, and twins James & Steve—who have grown up surrounded by the family’s love for nature, travel, and adventure. While each has pursued their own path, the spirit of hospitality and a deep connection to the places they’ve called home remain at the heart of the Walker family legacy.
And of course, no story of the Walkers would be complete without a mention of their beloved Smooth Fox Terriers, who have been a special part of their family.
